While at the Euston train station, professional violinist and Korean native Min-Jin Kym decided to head on into a local sandwich stop. She headed to the Pret A Manger cafe, got a snack, and came out again, only to find that something was missing. While getting a sandwich, Min-Jin Kym’s $1.9 million dollar Stradivarius violin and bows were stolen. Whoops.
The violin, made by Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivarius in 1696, is one of the rarest musical instruments ever crafted. The two bows in the box, one made by Peccatte and one made by the School of Bazin, are also very valuable. The Peccatte bow is worth over $97,000 and the School of Bazin bow is worth $7900 dollars. That’s a serious theft, as it’s a whole lot of money hidden in one tiny music case (that’ll end up getting $200 in a pawn shop or in the hands of some one-man band).
“These items hold enormous sentimental and professional value for the victim,” said Detective Inspector Andy Rose, of the British Transport Police. “But although they are extremely valuable, it would be very difficult to sell them on as they are so rare and distinctive that they will be easily recognized as stolen property. It’s possible the instrument will be offered for sale within the antique or musical trade and we ask anyone who has any knowledge of the violin’s whereabouts to come forward so it can be returned to its rightful owner.”
