While Aretha Franklin might have gained worldwide respect for her singing skills, the “Respect” singer and undisputed Queen of Soul isn’t immune to human frailties. According to reports, last night, Aretha Franklin underwent surgery to treat pancreatic cancer. If you’re a little worried that Franklin might be the next celebrity figure to pass from cancer, you’re not alone. Despite reports that she is doing okay and responding to treatment, pancreatic cancer is incredibly dangerous and very difficult to treat.
If you remember, pancreatic cancer is what killed Patrick Swayze. Even though the surgery was described as successful, Franklin is 68 and hasn’t been in the best of health, given her many years spent in the body-destroying entertainment industry. Last month, Franklin canceled all appearances and concerts from now until May 2011 on the orders of her doctors.
I hope the cancer was caught quickly and that Franklin will make a full recovery, but you can never tell with these things. Look at how long Elizabeth Edwards struggled with cancer before she passed.
