When Dr. Naushad Valiyani got a business card from pharmaceutical representative Muhammad Faizan, he did what most people do when they get a business card. Dr. Valiyani threw the business card away. That’s the reason why Dr. Valiyani was arrested. Pharmaceutical representative Muhammad Faizan shares a name with the prophet Muhammad, and he was offended. Muhammad the pharmaceutical rep convinced the police in Hyderabad, Pakistan, to arrest Dr. Valiyani for blasphemy because he threw away a business card with the name Muhammad on it.
Remember, we’re talking about a doctor throwing away a business card, not a doctor throwing away a Koran. There’s no actual blasphemy here, just a guy that shares his name with the prophet of Islam. However, don’t tell that to Pakistani authorities. Every year, dozens of people get arrested for trivial crimes like this one, and most of the cases are dismissed. It remains to be seen if this particular case will be thrown out or not.
Looks like that business card should’ve been used as a bookmark, instead of ending up in the trash can. At the very least, Dr. Valiyani should’ve waited until Faizan left before tossing out the card.
