For awhile, it looked as though the only participants in the Cliff Lee sweepstakes were the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers. As it turns out, there was a third team also fighting for Cliff Lee’s services as a starting pitcher, and it was that team that won the top prize. The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Cliff Lee to a 5-year, $120-million-dollar contract.
This will be Lee’s second go-around with the Phillies. He pitched for the Phils in the 2009 World Series, then he was traded to Seattle and Texas, where Lee pitched in last year’s World Series. Now, Lee’s back in Philly, where he wanted to be all along. Interestingly enough, Lee will be joining Roy Halladay, for whom he was traded a few years ago. That addition gives the Phillies one of the best starting twosomes in baseball.
