Good news, Microsoft! When Microsoft launched the Bing search engine in 2009, it had nowhere to go but up. Now, guess where it’s going? If you said up, you’d be correct. At the Bing Seminar in San Francisco, California, Microsoft Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Satya Nadella, announced some good news as far as Bing’s growth and adoption are concerned. Bing has topped 90 million users!
While 90 million users sounds like a lot, Bing’s overall share of the search market is only 11.8 percent by itself. Even when you combine Bing with Yahoo, whose search results are powered by Bing, the pair only garner 28 percent of the search market. While Bing is still dwarfed by Google, those numbers are up 48 percent since Bing’s June 2009 launch, including a 72 percent rise in moderate to heavy searchers and a staggering 224 percent growth in mobile users. Targeted searches are also up significantly, meaning Bing’s got some appeal with niche markets and for specific purposes.
Bing is gaining traction, which is good, but I imagine it’s not fast enough for Microsoft. After all, MS is losing billions of dollars a year on Bing; the turn-arounds can’t come fast enough.
