Last year, McClain County Operation Christmas gave out 786 presents to needy, low-income families. It’s not much, but for a local effort it’s a wonderful accomplishment. This year, Operation Christmas was slated to give out more than 800 presents. I say was because the presents may not all be usable now. A skunk got into Operation Christmas’s storage facility and sprayed down 800 of the charity’s presents with skunk funk. Now, the charity is scrambling to save what they can, toss what they can’t, and get replacement presents under trees before the holiday is here.
“I’ve already had a lot of phone calls. People here locally that have called and said ‘What can we do to help?'”said Peggy Christian, spokesperson for McClain County Operation Christmas. Still, volunteers aren’t giving up on the 800 soiled presents. “The ones laying out, they have been sprayed with Febreeze many, many times.”
If the presents have all soaked in the skunk smell, imagine the prize-winning stink that would be found inside that storage facility. No ventilation, the skunk spray left in there to linger and grow in funkiness… that’s got to be some epic stank. There’s not enough perfume in Detroit to cover that pew.
