World Extreme Cagefighting never got much credit in the mixed martial arts industry, but not for lack of fighting and not for lack of entertainment. While WEC never had the heavyweights and other larger fighters like the Ultimate Fighting Championship did, the WEC concentrated on what it did have, little guys who could fight like crazy. Last night’s WEC event, WEC 53, was the last event in company history (WEC has merged with UFC), but they’re going out with a bang. Witness the greatest knockout I’ve ever seen, Anthony Pettis’s flying wall-spring ninja death kick to the face of Ben Henderson (warning: naughty language at link).
This is quite possibly the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in the martial arts world, and I’ve watched a hundred martial arts movies and fight-centric TV shows, from Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee to Tony Jaa and Jackie Chan. You don’t see knockout kicks like this in movies, let alone in real life. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED!
Good luck finding your teeth, Ben. Anthony Pettis, who retained the WEC lightweight belt, becomes the new number one contender to the UFC’s lightweight belt. WEC’s bantamweight and featherweight champions will become the UFC’s bantamweight and featherweight champions.
