Some 46 years ago, Dennis Ferguson was down on his luck. The state of California kicked in some money to help him, paying him about $1100 in unemployment funds over the course of 5 months. Ferguson used that money for temporary housing and to learn computer programming. Now in 2010, Dennis Ferguson has repaid what he got from unemployment, writing California a check for $10,000.
Why $10,000? Well, that’s simple; it’s a nice round number. Ferguson, now 74 and living in South Carolina, wrote a little note in the notes section of the check. The $10,000 was given to California as “repayment for what California did for me.” State officials are going to put the money into a fund for education, officials in Sacramento have said.
Given the way things are going, California might want to put that money back into the unemployment fund, given how states are running out of unemployment money. If everyone paid back their unemployment, then maybe California wouldn’t need to sell ads on license plates; then again, unemployment is technically money you’ve earned that the state has taken just in case.
