There are certain things offensive linemen cannot do. Offensive line players can be pretty athletic, but they’re athletic for their size, not just flat-out athletic. Patriots guard Dan Connolly is 6’4 and listed at 313 pounds, so he’s not exactly a speed demon. However, his great size didn’t stop Patriots offensive guard Dan Connolly from running back a kickoff for a staggering 71 yards, rumbling around and through the Green Bay Packers special teams players like a wide receiver. Particularly impressive was Connolly’s stiff arm on Packers safety Charlie Peprah.
Connolly’s kickoff return was a new NFL record for an offensive lineman; the previous record belonged to Patriots offensive guard Stephen Neal, who had a 27-yard return in 2008. Interestingly, Dan Connolly replaced Stephen Neal on the Pats offensive line when Neal went on injured reserve earlier in the month. It wasn’t even a trick play, just an incredible hustle play.
The return proved to be a back-breaker for the Packers. Connolly’s return took him down to the four yard line, and Patriots quarterback did the rest, throwing a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Aaron Hernandez while Connolly drained oxygen tanks on the sidelines. The Patriots ended up winning the game 31-27. New England is now 12-2; Green Bay falls to 8-6.
