It all started innocently enough. When an elderly aunt died, she left Jean-Guy Laquerre an antique Santa Claus figure made out of papier-mache. From there, things got a little out of control. Through friends, relatives, and his own exhaustive efforts, Jean-Guy Laquerre has turned his modest home in Boucherville, Ontario, into a shrine to Santa Claus. Jean-Guy Laquerre has the world’s largest collection of Santa Claus items, having acquired over 25,000 Santa goodies.
“It awakened the child in me,” said Laquerre, who has dubbed his unusual collection a symptom of Santaphilia. “I started my collection in 1988. Over the past 22 years, I’ve accumulated 25,139 Santa baubles. I can’t stop myself entirely, but I do restrain my urges. I surprise myself when I go into a store and I don’t buy any new ones.” However, it’s not sanity that restrains Laquerre, “it’s because I just don’t have any more room for more figurines.”
Laquerre hopes to one day start a museum with his collection of Santa memorabilia. The previous collection certified as the world’s largest Santa collection was 1039 items held by a Texas woman (she held the record for 30 years). Laquerre has 1300 TABLE NAPKINS with Santa’s image on them. He’s not a hoarder; Laquerre hopes to one day donate his collection to a museum.
