One of the records that many believe would never be touched is the epic winning streak carried out by John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins basketball team back in the 70’s. From 1971 until 1974, John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins did not lose a basketball game. Rain or shine, ranked opponent or weak opponent, the UCLA Bruins simply did not lose. Now, Geno Auriemma’s University of Connecticut Lady Huskies are refusing to lose, the UConn women’s basketball team has tied the UCLA Bruins 88-game winning streak.
“Eighty-eight has always been that magical number. People just assume that that’s just never going to be touched,” says UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who has won 7 national championships while at UConn. Laughed coach Geno, “Women basketball players want to play for me because they see me as this gentle person who can guide them where they want to go, and all that crap.”
Of course, UConn’s winning streak is not without controversy, including the fact that UConn doesn’t play the other premiere women’s basketball team in the country, Pat Summitt’s University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Still, they continue to beat physical freak Brittney Griner and the Baylor Bears, as well as the other top women’s teams in the nation.
