During last night’s NFL tilt between the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings, the location of the game wasn’t the only interesting happening last night. Brett Favre returned, for a few minutes anyway, and Chicago Bears special teams monster Devin Hester broke the NFL record for kick returns for touchdowns. During the third quarter last night, Devin Hester returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown, breaking a tie with Brian Mitchell and scoring an NFL record 14th kick return for touchdown.
Not only did Hester break Brian Mitchell’s overall record, he also pulled himself into a tie for top punt returner all time with Eric Metcalf, as the punt return TD was Hester’s 10th career score off a punt. What’s amazing about Hester’s scoring ability on special teams isn’t the fact that he’s scoring these numbers, it’s because he’s doing it so quickly. It took Brian Mitchell 223 games and 1070 returns to get 13; Hester picked up number 14 in game 74 and return 286, while also playing on the defense and offense in his spare time. Staggering!
“I told you a long time ago I knew he would set the record one day,” said former record holder Brian Mitchell. “I am totally excited for him. I love to see anyone bring that kind of excitement to the return game. It’s great for the game for special teams to get this kind of recognition. Now there are plenty more touchdowns for him to go after.”
