Toyota has already paid a record $16.4 million dollar fine over its recent quality control issues and several delayed or botched recalls. Toyota, by delaying the recalls, ended up causing people serious injuries but saving $100 million dollars. That amount of cash saved keeps decreasing with every huge government fine. Toyota is being fined another $32.425 million dollars by the United States over a pair of recalls and unreported safety concerns.
The fines are related to Toyota’s accelerator-tangling floor mats, as well as a previously unreported tendency for the steering system of the Toyota to cause the car to lose control and wreck. It’s these two unreported flaws that Toyota knew about (but kept to themselves) which caused the government to come down hard on the world’s largest auto maker. Having problems is one thing; not telling people about your problematic cars and putting lives at risk is another.
