The weather outside is frightful, and hopefully you have a fire that’s so delightful. If you’re on the Eastern seaboard of the United States, you know firsthand just how frightful the weather can be, because you’re right in the middle of a serious weather event. The East Coast of the United States is being attacked by a blizzard as we speak, which has stranded air travelers throughout the country and provided extended Christmas vacations for others. It’s a full-fledged French Toast Alert out there!
“Unfortunately, our city is directly in the path,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday afternoon. “It’s hard to stand up in a 55-mph wind, so this really is dangerous.” Bloomberg advised people needing to travel to take mass transit and stay off the roads; New York City is under a blizzard warning until 6 PM today.
To illustrate how bad things are in New York City, all three of the city’s airports have closed. LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airports are all shut down. American Airlines has cancelled a total of 433 flights, and more might be on the way if weather conditions do not improve. In Philadelphia, where storms have dumped nearly two feet of snow, an NFL game was postponed to avoid the blizzard conditions, not long after a different snow storm collapsed the roof of the Metrodome. Yeesh.
