While at the grocery store the other day, I noticed something on one of those year-end memorial editions of People Magazine that I hadn’t considered. Three of the stars of the 1980 classic comedy Airplane! passed away in 2010. Peter Graves, Barbara Billingsley, and Leslie Nielsen all died this year. As such, it’s kind of fitting that 2010 would become the year of Airplane! Airplane! is one of 25 films added to the Library of Congress and the National Film Registry.
If 2010 is the year of Airplane!, then George Lucas might be second on the list. He’s the only man on the list to have two films inducted into the National Film Registry in the same year. Lucas made the list with his classic The Empire Strikes Back (whose director Irving Kershner also died this year) and the student film that inspired Lucas’s own THX 1138. Also added to the list are Malcolm X, The Exorcist, All The President’s Men, and Blake Edwards‘ The Pink Panther. (Apparently you have to die to make the list.)
The Library of Congress is the national library of note, dedicated to preserving films, books, musical works, and Tweets for future generations. The 25 films chosen are part of the National Film Registry and were chosen by the National Film Preservation Board. The board is made up of 44 members and alternates from the acting, production, and directing ranks, as well as representatives from the MPAA, theater owners, and film critics.
