Debated for months and long rumored as a last-day possibility for outgoing governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson, it looks as if the pardon of Billy the Kid by the state of New Mexico won’t be happening. On Good Morning America this morning, Governor Bill Richardson has announced that he will not be pardoning Billy The Kid for the murder of a New Mexico law enforcement officer nearly 130 years ago. Billy the Kid, born William Bonney, was promised clemency in exchange for a testimony at another murder trial.
Billy testified as promised, but was not pardoned by then-governor Lew Wallace as promised. Billy escaped from jail, of course, and was shot by Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner in 1881. Sorry, Billy. Not only are you still dead, you’re also still a wanted man in New Mexico.
