Raw milk producer Our Cows Dairy in Chilliwack, British Columbia, has been running into trouble. Under BC’s Public Health Act, raw milk sold for human consumption is a health hazard and thus, the dairy was ordered to stop producing raw milk. Rather than investing in a Pasteurization system, Our Cows and their 22-head herd have simply changed businesses. The milk that used to be used for dairy products is now considered body lotion.
What used to be sold as raw milk for human consumption is now sold as something called Cleopatra’s enzymatic body lotion. The raw cream the dairy once sold is now packaged as a massage aid. The dairy’s manager, Michael Schmidt, is attempting to have the farm’s milk products certified as cosmetics to have them regulated under the federal Food and Drugs Act. It’s a bit like selling incandescent light bulbs as heatballs, but smarter as raw milk has been used as a skin treatment for thousands of years.
“It’s another under-the-table, sneaky way of trying to get around the law,” said Robin Smith, executive director of the British Columbia Milk Producers Association, who characterized the rebranding as a “big fake”. “It’s cloaking a cow in Cleopatra’s robes.”
