The executive train at Microsoft is showing no signs of slowing down. A few months after the departure of Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, yet another Microsoft executive is heading for the unemployment line. The head of Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business, Bob Muglia, is stepping down. Muglia had been involved in the company for an impressive 23 years; he will be stepping down after a replacement is hired sometime this summer.
“Bob Muglia and I have been talking about the overall business and what is needed to accelerate our growth. In this context, I have decided that now is the time to put new leadership in place for STB,” wrote Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “This is simply recognition that all businesses go through cycles and need new and different talent to manage through those cycles.”
Under Muglia’s reign, the STB wing of Microsoft has grown into a $15 billion dollar business. Muglia also took over the development of Office 365 and Azure after Ozzie’s departure. Now someone else is going to be taking over for Muglia.
