Lionsgate, like most movie studios, missed out on jumping on board the Harry Potter franchise when the going was good, but they’re not making that mistake with the latest Young Adult book series to garner national acclaim and huge amounts of praise and attention. Lionsgate snapped up the rights to The Hunger Games and have announced when the first movie in the series will be released. The Hunger Games will be coming out on March 23, 2012.
The Hunger Games is a best-selling book of young adult novels written by Suzanne Collins. It details the story of Katniss Everdeen and her quest to survive in a brutal and blood-thirsty reality television contest sometime in the distant future. It’s like an amped-up version of Survivor where violence is encouraged, basically. The first film will be directed by Gary Ross, who did Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, and has a budget of about $60 million dollars.
