When it comes to the Super Bowl, fans expect more. From the big, flashy halftime show to the epic commercials, fans expect more than just football with their football game. However, one element of the cavalcade of excess that comes along with the Super Bowl will be missing from the sidelines: cheerleaders. The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have team cheerleaders, making Super Bowl XLV the first game with no official cheerleaders present since Super Bowl II.
However, if you want to be pedantic, and I love being a pedant, both teams have had cheerleaders or have unofficial cheer sections. While there are no official Packers cheerleaders that travel with the team, the Packers do have unofficial official cheerleaders they recruit from nearby colleges in the Green Bay area; those cheerleaders work Lambeau Field games only. The Steelers also have had cheerleaders before (in the 1970’s), though they later discontinued these. Six NFL teams do not have official cheerleaders: Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and Detroit Lions.
“I’m surprised that Jerry Jones didn’t say, ‘If we’re playing the game in Dallas, my cheerleaders are going to come out at halftime and put on a show,'” laughed Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel. “They are both old organizations who stick to their guns as far as the cheerleading crew goes. I think it’s cool; maybe the fans don’t like it as much. We love the fact that the Rooneys are old-school and haven’t changed their ways.”
