It’s been a night of musical missteps at Cowboys Stadium, starting with a lyrics failure before Super Bowl XLV‘s kickoff. Personally, I was looking forward to hearing Christina Aguilera’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” because that woman has some serious pipes. The performance was a little bit rough, though, considering how difficult it was at times to understand what she was singing. Few people had trouble understanding her, however, when she forgot the song’s fourth line.
That verse is supposed to read: “O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.” Instead, the Grammy Award-winning singer merged it with the song’s second line, which she had just sung, producing: “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming?” Oops.
On the bright side, though, at least she wasn’t plagued with quite as many pitch problems as other singers have been when singing live in a large space (I’m looking at you, Macy Gray), and that’s more than we can say for the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie, who sounded like she had to force out every note during the half-time show. We’ll let that last strained note slide.
