Google loves a good excuse to change their Google Doodle (that little Google logo on their main search page). At the drop of a hat, they’re ready and willing to design a fun new doodle. They’ve Doodled up tributes to artists, musicians, and even inventions. Now, Google’s Doodle is honoring Jules Verne. Verne was born on this day, February 8, 1828, in Nantes, Brittany, France
Long considered the father of science fiction, Verne is something between a prophet and a genius once you consider just how many modern inventions Verne correctly predicted. In this case, Google’s Doodle depicts the portholes of the Nautilus, Verne’s most famous invention from Verne’s most famous work, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
This Doodle is pretty fun. You can control the path and depth of the Nautilus with the lever to your right as you look at the Doodle, discovering fun aquatic creatures, treasure chests, and even a piece of Google-shaped coral. It’s fun and interactive, but not to the distracting point like Google’s Pac-Man Doodle.
