Rabbit Hash, Kentucky is really going to the dogs, and I mean that literally. This small, unincorporated spot along the Ohio River is run by a border collie by the name of Lucy Lou.
Lucy Lou was elected “mayor for life” in a close election back in 2008, running against several other dogs, a cat, a donkey, an opossum, and a solitary human—who came in second to last! She’s the third dog to hold the position since it was created in 1998. More importantly, she’s the first bitch to reach the post. Her two predecessors were both male.
The election that won Lucy her fame doubled as a fundraiser, benefiting the Rabbit Hash Historical Society. Each voter contributed one dollar for each ballot cast. The proceeds went to fund the restoration of a historic church.
Being top dog in Rabbit Hash doesn’t equal a lot of money or other perks usual to executive positions, but it does require frequent public appearances. Reportedly, Mayor Lucy Lou is excellent at fulfilling these obligations and is known for her friendly, open nature. She’s always quick to check in for a brief visit with her constituents when she sees them out in the community. Based on that alone, it sounds like a lot of human politicians could learn a thing or two from Mayor Lucy Lou.
