Since the first book of the Vampire Diaries, author LJ Smith has been involved in every aspect of the creation of the world, but that involvement is coming to an end. Author LJ Smith has been fired from the Vampire Diaries series that she started 20 years ago. It’s strange to see an author fired from her own book series, except it’s not really her book. The book belongs to her publishers, so it’s not stealing so much as firing and replacing.
As it turns out, Smith was nothing more than a hired gun. The publisher, HarperCollins, created the premise and hired Smith to create the work. While she created the characters and settings and so-forth, HarperCollins retained control of the project, which became a best-seller and the basis of a hit TV series. When Smith decided after 20-odd years to branch out from the interpersonal relationships that HarperCollins wanted to be the focus of the novels, she was released from the work.
