It’s one of the most stressful jobs you can have. A news reporter, going live at an event, ready to make an introduction. Then all of a sudden your tongue gets tied. In the case of Los Angeles reporter Serene Branson, your tongue gets epically tied and you become the star of a viral video. A lot of people got a lot of laughs out of the video, but not me. To me, what Branson suffered may have been a transient ischemic attack, or TIA, which is another word for a type of stroke. Here’s the video; hopefully it won’t get pulled anytime soon.
According to KCBS, Branson’s employer, what I kind of feel is a televised stroke is actually a case of epic nerves. She didn’t suffer a brain trauma, she just made a mistake.
“Serene Branson was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast,” said a statement issued by the station. “Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized. As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home and she says that she is feeling fine this morning.”
I’m not sure a brief examination by a paramedic is good enough in this case. What she displayed is pretty textbook when it comes to symptoms of a mini-stroke, though to most people it’s just a tongue twister. The verbal apraxia alone is a troublesome sign of a serious neurological disorder. I just hope that she’s actually okay and was just worried, and that I’m worrying for nothing.
