Silvio Berlusconi can’t get a break. After causing himself great embarrassment, he’s now facing criminal charges. Silvio Berlusconi is set to go on trial on April 6 on charges of paying for sex with an underage girl and abuse of power. Berlusconi is accused of paying for sex with Karima El Mahroug, AKA Ruby the Stripper, who was underage at the time of the transaction. He’s also facing charges of abuse of power after his attempted cover-up of the scandal, as well as trying to use his leverage to get his favorite hooker out of jail free.
According to judge Cristina Di Censo, Berlusconi’s trial will begin on April 6; she rejected prosecution calls for an immediate trial for the embattled Italian prime minister and media mogul. Don’t kid yourselves; this trial is going to be crazy. Italy loves a scandal, and the fact that it’s an escort scandal involving a politician just makes it juicer. Given that Berlusconi controls a great deal of the media, it’s also a chance for competitor organizations to directly attack their rival publications.
This trial is going to get very, very interesting.
