In the first mental battle between man and machine, the first round was pretty evenly matched. Watson took an early lead, but the humans responded and the first part of the first game ended in a tie. During the Double Jeopardy round, Watson again took an early lead. This time, he didn’t let it go. Watson the IBM computer crushed Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, winning $35,734 in the first game of man versus machine Jeopardy!
Watson took the reigns of round two from the very first question and simply did not let up. Ken Jennings managed only $4,800 for the whole game, while Brad Rutter finished the first game with $10,400. However, that was just the first game; the second game of the two-game series will be taking place tonight. I can only imagine just how much more money Watson will steal from the humans in the second game.
I don’t know what they did to him between the first two games, but he was like a totally different AI program out there. He just never let up. Kudos, IBM programmers; you’ve won Jeopardy! but you’ve also killed us all.
