From Farrah Fawcett’s swimsuit to huge balls of petrified giant sloth dung, the Smithsonian has something for everyone and the collection is about to get even more vast.
Gamers, be you Boy Scouts or not, put down your controllers for a moment and take note, the nation’s most interesting museum is about to put a new collection on display and they want your input.
Beginning on March 16th and running into September, the Smithsonian will feature “The Art of Video Games.”
“The Art of Video Games exhibition will explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers.”
Right now, the museum is asking gamers to vote for what they consider the most artistic representations of video games. Your favorite examples of dazzling visual effects and breakthrough innovations are what they are looking for.
They are looking for 80 games and they’ve broken the voting into five eras of gaming going all the way back to the pre-8-bit examples. I’m not sure they’ll find any visually stimulating action in early games like Pong, but oh well. At least they’re looking. They’ve also narrowed the field down to 20 gaming systems to vote for.
Vote and let your voice be heard. The polls are open through April 7, 2011.
