Breast milk can be a lot of things, depending on the age of the person involved in its consumption. For babies and some cheese fans, breast milk is food. For others, breast milk is a weapon. For ice cream manufacturers, it’s an experiment. From London-based ice cream parlor Icecreamists comes Baby Gaga, ice cream made with human breast milk among other ingredients. In fact, Baby Gaga is 75 percent breast milk, 25 percent cow’s milk, with a little bit of Madagascar vanilla and lemon zest thrown in for flavor.
“Some people are turned off by the idea,” said Icecreamists founder Matt O’Connor in an interview with AOL News. “But, really, it raises the philosophical question: Is it better if we use milk from cows injected with hormones who are artificially induced with pregnancy every few months, or human milk?”
So, how does it taste? Well, according to O’Connor, it depends on the source. Said O’Connor, “The taste varies enormously, based on how long a woman has been lactating and her diet in general. Its viscosity is more watery than cow’s milk and it’s sweeter.”
A serving of Baby Gaga will retail for about $22 US. Fifteen mothers are donating their leche to the cause, with donors getting the same screening exam that blood donors receive. O’Connor pays $1.61 per ounce of breast milk produced, which means that it’s great work for stay-at-home moms.
