It’s not every day that a university dismisses a top basketball player on the verge of a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, but Brigham Young University has done just that. The team’s third-leading scorer and top rebounder is 6’10 Brandon Davies; rather, he WAS their top rebounder and third-leading scorer. Davies was removed from the team for breaking BYU’s honor code. He didn’t break any laws; Brandon Davies was dismissed from the BYU Cougars basketball team because of premarital sex.
It’s not a big deal at most colleges, but most colleges aren’t BYU. BYU is perennially the most sober school in the US, and students who go to BYU agree not to smoke, drink, use caffeine, have premarital sex, or wear beards (among many, many other things they swear not to do). BYU has much less problems with fighting than they do with fornication, as one can see from their punishment of brawlin’ Lady Cougars soccer player Elizabeth Lambert.
You hate to see a guy dismissed from the team for something like this, especially considering that at most colleges you have to steal from the coach to get thrown off a team. Still, I guess you have to play by Mormon rules when you go to a Mormon school.
