Serena Williams has won 13 major titles during her career in the WTA, but here lately she’s had a streak of bad luck. Serena Williams cut her foot on glass in Germany, requiring two surgeries, and she was just cleared to begin her rehabilitation when doctors discovered a potentially fatal medical condition. Serena Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism, or blood clot in her lungs, which may be related to her surgical procedure. Williams was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she received treatment for a second medical issue, a hematoma related to treatments of the blood clots. Serena Williams may be out of tennis for good after undergoing treatment for blood clots and related hemorrhaging.
“This has been extremely hard, scary, and disappointing,” said a statement released by Williams. “I know I will be OK, but am praying and hoping this will all be behind me soon. While I can’t make any promises now on my return, I hope to be back by early summer. That said, my main goal is to make sure I get there safely.”
Amazingly enough, Serena Williams won Wimbledon in July. Since then, she’s basically been unable to play tennis. She’s dropped from number 1 in the world to number 11, and that ranking will sink farther as she spends more and more time in the hospital and less time on the courts. Still, it will give Serena a chance to work on her fashion line she has with sister Venus.
