There are records, and there are achievements. Career marks are records, because they take forever and aren’t terribly impressive when considered across a 15- or 20-year career. Then, there are single-season marks and streaks like that put up by Minnesota Timberwolves player Kevin Love. Last night, Kevin Love tied Moses Malone’s NBA record with his 51st straight double-double as the Minnesota Timberwolves fell to the Dallas Mavericks, 108-105. The record Love tied is held by Moses Malone, who ran off 51 double-doubles in 1978-79. This is tied for the longest streak since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. Love scored 23 points and snagged 17 rebounds to safely earn his way into the record books.
“I’d be jumping for joy if we were winning and everybody was playing great, including myself,” admitted Love. “I’m just going out there and playing hard, and it is just kind of happening for me. But it is kind of an afterthought because we aren’t winning.”
The NBA’s overall record for double-doubles is 55, set by the legendary Elvin Hayes in 1973-74. So yeah, four more games, and Kevin Love will own the outright NBA record, rather than just the post-merger record. Keep snagging boards, Kevin! You had your doubters coming out of college, but I think you’re showing them all that you’re much more physically skilled than everyone had given you credit for, and you’re one of the best rebounders in the NBA.
