I’m surprised it took her this long to flee the sinking ship, but it’s finally happened. Julie Taymor is out as the director of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. She says she had previous commitments that prevented her from dedicating herself full-time to Spider-Man (and working out the troubles with said musical). In her place steps Philip William McKinley, who brought Hugh Jackman’s The Boy From Oz to Broadway. That’s his only credit, by the way; if you can explain to me why they think someone with no experience in staging a big musical with lots of props can replace someone whose major Broadway credit is nothing but props, but that’s why they make these decisions.
Amazingly, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark has been doing preview performances since November 28. Despite these long months of rehearsals, changes, and multiple serious injuries, the show’s still not officially a show. It’s just there, at the Foxwoods Theater in New York, playing in front of packed houses in spite of the fact it’s not open. The show’s new current opening date is “sometime in summer.” I look forward to it getting pushed back until 2012 within the next few months.
