Pole Dancing for Jesus: MyFoxHOUSTON.com
The pole-dancing fitness craze is pretty well-established already, and has been for a couple of years now, but now a former stripper from Texas is trying to put a new spin on things: she’s trying to recast it as a method for worship.
Crystal Deans offers her “Pole Fitness for Jesus” class to church goers in the community of Old Town Spring, Texas on the second Sunday of every month. Deans, who was once an exotic dancer by profession, says she does not aim to create strippers—though in this economy, one must wonder if it would be so terrible to have that as a skill to fall back on—but wants to take the parts she liked about pole-dancing, namely the fitness component, and use those to help women connect to the teachings of Christ.
Just how she hopes to achieve those aims is unclear, however. Deans does not lead prayer before class, and there are no crosses on the walls, or other similar paraphernalia to be seen inside her studio. The only obvious connection is her choice of music: “upbeat contemporary Christian music,” as she calls it. She does require participants to bring a church pamphlet to gain admission, though; there is no other fee.
Unsurprisingly, not everyone has been receptive of Deans’ aims. Though several of the younger women in the community have embraced the classes as a means of being social with other women in a safe environment, there have been others who have been less approving. Supposedly, some have even shown up on her doorstep, Bibles in-hand, but Deans invites her critics to judge however they see fit, stating that as long as she’s right with God, that’s all that matters.
