Inspiration for creative people can come from many sources.
A glance into an aquarium can result in dazzling dresses based on exotic fish or maybe a blinking stoplight results in a dress encased in LEDs.
Or in the case of designer Ryan Novelline, familiar children’s literature sparked an itch to create.
Normally books are the end result of creativity, not the cause. Remember the Poky Little Puppy and the Little Red Hen. Unlike a book that teaches children about plastic surgery, they are part of the old-school Little Golden Book series, and Novelline used them to create a dress fit for a fairy tale princess in addition to Project Runway. There’s a lot more to this dress than the fashion piece that captured a real prince’s heart.
The voluminous skirt and trailing train are created by sewing together illustrations from the children’s books with metallic gold thread. In all, the skirt is 22,000 square inches.
The designer used the gold foil from the spines of the book to piece together the bodice for the dress.
