Just in time for summer comes the latest in wine innovations. Francis Ford Coppola Winery has been selling wine in cans since 2004, but I’ve never seen them in my area, which is a little strange as I’ve worked in a liquor store before. Still, the idea was out there, but nobody was brave enough to run with it until JT Wines of California introduced an incredible new product called Flasq, or I guess FLASQ in corporate spelling. FLASQ is selling 12-ounce servings of wine in aluminum, flask-shaped bottles, and people love this idea.
There’s nothing worse than opening a bottle of wine and having it go sour because you don’t drink it fast enough (or so I hear from wine-drinking friends; I’m not a wine-drinker). So the idea of single-serving wine was a good one, but bottles are heavy and glass is usually banned from public places. That’s where JT Wines comes in with an aluminum wine bottle.
Apparently, in a blind taste test, nobody could tell the difference between bottled wine and canned wine. Or canned wine and boxed wine, for that matter. It’s not quite up to the level of a serve-yourself wine tank or a wine vending machine, but it’s a great start to heading down that road. Now let’s get some canned wine and wine vending machines into liquor stores and cut out a lot of travel time for a lot of wine-loving folks.
