In one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen, two worlds collided on Fox last night, yet nothing was destroyed except my sense of reality. Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Iggy Pop, the 63-year-old proto-punk wild man famous for rolling in broken glass and cutting himself on stage during shirtless, sweat-soaked performances, is the complete antithesis of everything that the Fox reality show American Idol stands for, yet somehow their worlds collided. That’s right, boys and girls, Iggy Pop was on American Idol last night. How this happened is beyond my comprehension.
Just watch this video, if you dare, of Pop singing “Wild Child” to a stunned audience of musical neophytes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDQL0Y0TCGYWe’re all in agreement that somehow Steven Tyler is responsible for this, right? Or that, perhaps, American Idol producers are so ratings-crazed that they’re willing to go way, way, WAY beyond their comfort zone in an attempt to spice up the show. After all, while American Idol has produced some rock stars and rock singers, none of them are the actual Idol winners. Maybe the show is actually going to let a rock and roll singer win for once, rather than hand the title over to another pop tart or adult contemporary wannabe.
