In 2005, two video-sharing websites started. One of these would go on to be more popular than broadcast television and a leader in the video revolution. The other, Google Video, would soon be forgotten as its parent company decided to buy the competition. Google has announced that Google Video will be closing for good on May 13, 2011, and in the spirit of preservation, has opened up all Google Videos for downloading purposes.
Well, fortunately, the Internet is there to preserve its history. Remember when Geocities closed, and archivists stepped into back up 900GB of deleted Geocities websites? Well, the same group of history buffs, the Archive Team, will be working hard to save as much of Google Video’s content as possible, with the Internet Archives donating 100TB of server space to save and preserve this important piece of Internet history.
The Internet is changing all the time, gang. You can’t take anything for granted anymore, if only because there are so many mergers and acquisitions and whatnot that you never know what website will be sticking around for the long haul and what website will be folded and lost forever.
