The next E3 event won’t be until June, but that hasn’t stopped people from talking about it. Adding fuel to the E3 fire is the news that Nintendo will be doing something pretty radical in Los Angeles, California, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Nintendo will be debuting a playable version of Project Cafe, AKA Wii 2 or Wii HD, at this year’s E3. Cue the speculation!
We don’t know a lot about the next version of Nintendo’s wildly-successful video game system, but we do know some things. Information that leaked late last week indicates that Project Cafe will feature an 8-button controller with a 6.2-inch screen and a built-in camera designed to be used during gaming. It will also feature backwards support for the current Wii’s games and possibly even the current Wiimotes. The expected retail price is unknown, but I’ve read rumors that Nintendo was shooting for $350.
The current Wii has sold 86 million consoles worldwide and is far and away the most successful video game console of the current generation, and one of the biggest money-makers for Nintendo in a long, long time. However, the knock on the Wii is that it’s not hardcore enough; well, given some of the leaked specs and capabilities of the next Wii, it looks as though Nintendo is taking on its detractors while not losing sight of its new army of casual gamers.
