When it comes to coupons, the future of extreme couponing is obviously group deals akin to the like pursued by companies like Groupon and Living Social. Groupon has been wildly successful, and Living Social has received some big investments from Amazon, so it’s only natural that a company like Facebook would want to leverage their cash and join in on that lucrative business. Facebook is launching a new daily deals service akin to Groupon starting today. Of course, being based on the back of a social network means that social is going to be crucial for Facebook’s deals, at least according to Facebook.
“We’re building a product that is social from the ground up,” says Facebook’s director of local, Emily White. “All of these deals are things you want to do with friends, so no teeth whitening, but yes to river rafting.”
Facebook’s deals service is being rolled out in five cities as part of a trial run starting today. Facebook’s deals will be debuting in San Diego, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas, and Austin. Facebook is partnering with 11 other companies, like OpenTable and Viagogo, to get their new deals service off the ground. By buying from Facebook, the deal is shared in your friend feed; for some deals, if friends also buy, you get an additional discount.
