Cleveland's draft lottery team, including 14-year-old Nick Gilbert, celebrates.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, still heart-broken by LeBron James’s decision to take his talents to South Beach, have been able to receive some small consolation last night at the NBA Draft lottery. Thanks to a lucky bounce with the ping-pong balls, Cleveland has been able to draw the top pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, thereby setting Cleveland fans up for their next heartbreak when projected top pick Kyrie Irving (or whoever Cleveland picks) leaves town to go play point guard for the LA Lakers or Charlotte Bobcats or Dallas Mavericks in a few seasons (or worse, is a complete dud).
Amazingly, this wasn’t even Cleveland’s original pick; the lucky ping-pong ball was one Cleveland got in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers; Cleveland’s real draft pick turned out to be number four! That gives Cleveland two of the better picks in a pretty lousy draft. The Utah Jazz also got lucky in trades, with their pick received from New Jersey turning into the third pick in the draft; Utah’s own pick turned out to be number twelve.
Once again, for the 14th straight year, the Minnesota Timberwolves (the NBA’s worst team last year) failed to win the ping-pong pick for number one; instead, the T’Wolves will pick second. While it’s not the top pick they hoped for, maybe they’re better off. After all, Oklahoma City isn’t regretting that second pick, since they got to choose Kevin Durant rather than Greg Oden.
Rounding out the top five is the Toronto Raptors, who nabbed the fifth pick.
