Lady Gaga has morphed from a dark-haired piano-rock singer named Stefani Germanotta into a full-fledged phenomenon. Born This Way, Lady Gaga’s latest album sold over 1.1 million copies during its debut week, thanks to a staggering 662,000 digital downloads from Amazon.com. Born This Way was sold for under $1 by Amazon.com’s MP3 downloading service in a gamble by Gaga to break 1 million sales and a gamble by Amazon to take over more of the MP3 market. It remains to be seen if Amazon’s gamble was successful, but Gaga’s certainly was.
Once again, Lady Gaga is a record-breaker. She’s the first billion-view artist on YouTube and she scored the 1000th number one hit on the Billboard Charts. With this amazing debut, Lady Gaga becomes only one of five women to score a million-selling album and Born This Way is only the 17th album to break this sales mark in the SoundScan era (since 1991). Born This Way was also the first album to sell 1 million or more since Taylor Swift’s Speak Now in November and the highest selling album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005.
