When it comes to pets, most of them live better than people. They eat, play, and sleep all day while their human masters toil at jobs. If their owner is a good person at all (and sometimes if they’re not), they live the life most of us wish we had. Trouble, a Maltese who once belonged to Leona Helmsley, was living the sweet life until her master died in 2007. When Helmsley, the Queen of Mean, passed away, she left her dog $12 million dollars. Though this amount was later reduced to $2 million, Trouble was still living a pretty sweet life. Trouble, the world’s richest dog, passed away on December 13.
“She was cremated and her remains are being privately retained. The funds held in trust for her care have reverted to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust for charitable purposes,” said Eileen Sullivan, spokesman for the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
Trouble, who lived to be 12, was being cared for by the manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel in Sarasota, Florida. Upon Trouble’s death, the remaining portion of her $2 million inheritance reverted back into the hands of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. Of Trouble’s original $12 million share of Helmsley’s billions, $2 million went to the dog, $4 million went to the Trust, and $6 million went to two of Helmsley’s grandchildren who were cut from the will before her death.
