Dirk vanquishes his nickname, Nowinski.
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. LeBron James made himself a villain, stabbed his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers in the back, and fled to the superstar-ladened Miami Heat in pursuit of championships and glory. King James was supposed to rise to the occasion, topple Dirk Nowitski, Jason Kidd, and the rest of the ancient Dallas Mavericks in game six, then go on and claim game seven of the NBA Championship and get his first title ring. That didn’t happen. Finals MVP Dirk Nowitski and the Dallas Mavericks toppled the Miami Heat 105-95 in game six, winning the NBA Finals four games to two. The Dallas Mavericks are your NBA Champions for 2010-11.
Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were no match for Jason Terry and JJ Barea, two little-known and limited offensive players not known for their all-world basketball skills. Dallas’s ancient point guard Jason Kidd, who last went to the finals at the opening of this decade (when I was a teenager), somehow put everything together one last time. And Dirk, the man formerly called Nowinski, showed true grit, averaged double-digit points in the fourth quarter of the entire series, and came up big when it mattered.
Kudos to controversial owner Mark Cuban and his squad of grizzled veterans for their victory. Good has triumphed over evil, and all is right in the world. At least until next season.
