Alyssa Campanella has a lot of experience with beauty pageants. She’s a former Miss Teen USA runner-up from New Jersey, and she’s the reigning Miss California USA. Now, thanks to her victory last night, Alyssa Campanella was crowned Miss USA 2011 at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. She beat 50 other hopefuls during the competition; the runner up was Miss Tennessee Ashley Durham; Miss Congeniality was Miss Kentucky Kia Ben-et Hampton and Miss Photogenic was Miss Arizona Brittany Dawn Brannon. She was crowned by Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih.
“I was going through a tough time in high school and she thought it’d be a great way for me to meet other girls throughout the state,” said Campanella of her start in pageants, including that Miss Teen USA runner-uo in 2007. “It’s Mom’s fault.”
The new Miss USA isn’t just a brainless beauty, either. She graduated high school in Manalapan, New Jersey, a year early, got a scholarship to the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, and she’s a self-described history nerd for the British monarchy who played Angry Birds backstage to take her mind off the competition. She’ll represent the USA in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on September 12. Mexico’s Jimena Navarette was last year’s Miss Universe.
