Jeff Bezos is a man with a dream. That dream? Build something that will puzzle future generations long after he is dead. his solution? Build a giant clock that will keep accurate time for 10,000 years. Fortunately, others have laid the groundwork for Bezos’ folly; all it takes is his money. Here’s how you build a clock that lasts 10,000 years.
“Over the lifetime of this clock, the United States won’t exist,” Bezos told Wired. “Whole civilisations will rise and fall. New systems of government will be invented. You can’t imagine the world — no one can — that we’re trying to get this clock to pass through.”
The clock was originally proposed in Wired Magazine by pseudo-mad scientist Danny Hillis and the Long Now Foundation, who have been trying to get a 10,000-year clock built since 1995 or so. Turns out, their money mark was Bezos, who has been aspiring to do something to leave his mark on the world (aside from creating the e-reader industry and founding the most successful online retailer in the world). As for the clock, it will be built in Texas’s rugged and dry Sierra Diablo Mountains.
