It’s one of the most dramatic comeback stories ever. Once upon a time, no one thought Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat from Arizona, would ever open her eyes again. Gabrielle opened her eyes. They thought she’d never be able to leave the hospital. Giffords walked out of rehab. Now, Rep. Giffords has returned to the job, if only for one crucial event. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head early this year, made a dramatic return to the House of Representatives to vote on the debt ceiling bill.
“I have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington,” said Giffords in a statement after her surprising (and dramatic) vote. “I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.”
While Giffords’ vote didn’t make a difference in the debt limit bill, which passed 269-161, it was a big deal to her compatriots in the House. Both Republicans and Democrats went to hug and congratulate Giffords, and as she entered the House with only minutes left to vote, it was very much a last-minute, dramatic entrance for the Arizona Representative, who made her first appearance in Congress since she was shot in the head at a campaign stop on January 8.
