When it comes to obsession, look no further than 19-year-old Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones. Despite being from Beeston, Notts, in the UK, she loves Korean culture. When I say loves, I mean LOVES, as Ms. Brooksbank-Jones has undergone some unusual body modification to increase her capacity to love Korea. Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones had tongue-lengthening surgery to speak better Korean.
“I’d been learning Korean for about two years, and my speaking level was high, but I was really struggling with particular sounds,” said Brooksbank-Jones, who is going to major in Korean Studies in school. “It became apparent after a little while that I was having trouble with the Korean letter ‘L’, which is very frequent and comes from a slightly higher place in the mouth than the English ‘L’, and that my tongue was too short. The surgical procedure was my only option. My pronunciation was very ‘foreign’, but now I can speak with a native Korean accent.”
Good for her, I guess. While having a slightly shorter tongue than normal might cause a few tongue twisters, I’m not sure it’s worth surgery just to be able to speak Korean with a better accent. While the surgery involved a simple lingual frenectomy in which the strip connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth was snipped, it still seems painful for a limited purpose. I guess the 15 minutes of surgery was worth it to her, but I think I’d just take my bad Korean accent and be happy I can speak the language period.
