After talking about a brawl at a church and a wounded vet having his prosthetic hands stolen, it’s always great to share uplifting news here at PopFi.
The beginning of the school year and librarians coming to the rescue provide that opportunity.
After tornadoes in the spring devastated schools in Joplin, Missouri, the task of cleaning up and preparing for the 2011-12 school year got under way. Obviously books are a huge part of any education and the school system’s librarians were charged with the seemingly impossible task of creating libraries from scratch.
Thankfully donated books poured in to Joplin, but along with them came the task of sorting and cataloging them. Other school systems in Missouri donated their librarians’ time to help organize the 70,000 books that were new to the Joplin students.
The bounty of books sent to the devastated Missouri town was so overwhelming that there was enough of a surplus to give each local student five or six books to re-establish their own personal library. They didn’t have to visit a vending machine to get their books, but for people living in FEMA trailers that is a wonderful part of the road to recovery.
