It takes a big company to admit it has made a mistake, especially after burning through multiple millions of dollars in the process. As it turns out, HP is a pretty big company. Its biggest mistake? Probably the expensive and unpopular HP TouchPad tablet computer. It’s like an iPad 2, but not as good, and HP is finally killing the TouchPad. Oh yeah, HP is also ending WebOS, too. HP is moving to kill all its WebOS-powered devices, from the HP TouchPad to vast swaths of smartphones. As it turns out, buying Palm wasn’t the best idea.
“Our TouchPad has not been gaining enough traction in the marketplace. We have made the difficult but necessary decision to shut down the WebOS hardware operations,” admitted HP CEO Leo Apotheker.
Let’s see… a late summer launch AFTER back to school shopping season is done, sluggish hardware, a mediocre user experience, and a price that was too high to begin with that was cut a few weeks after launch? It’s not terribly surprising that the TouchPad failed after only 5 weeks on the market; after all, if WebOS was that good, Palm wouldn’t have gone out of business.
